How Do Acne and Acne Scarring Occur?

Acne develops when pores become clogged. A person’s predisposition to getting acne is determined based on their hormones. During puberty, hormones called androgens increase the size of the skin’s oil glands. These glands start making more oil, which can clog pores. Certain lifestyle habits such as smoking have also been found to contribute to acne. Stress can often increase the severity of breakouts as well.

What Are the Signs?

When you have acne, you can develop any (or a combination) of these breakouts on your skin:

  • Whiteheads – blemishes that are raised and white (or flesh-colored).
  • Blackheads – excess oil and dead skin cell buildup cause blackheads. These appear black due to a chemical reaction that occurs when the buildup gets exposed to oxygen.
  • Pimples – pimples are caused by a buildup of bacteria in pores. Pimples that contain pus are called pustules. Pimples without pus are called papules.
  • Nodules, cysts, or both (deep and painful) – Nodules often become inflamed and painful. An acne cyst contains pus whereas a nodule does not. For this reason, nodules feel harder to the touch.

Acne Treatment Options

At Sagebrush Dermatology, we can evaluate the severity of your acne and recommend treatment. We take the time to explore both traditional and allopathic medical options to give you the widest range of treatment possibilities.

Your treatment will depend on several factors, such as the type of acne you have, your age, your prior treatment history, and more. Common options include benzoyl peroxide and retinoids. When you arrive at our office, we can also discuss treatments for scarring you may also be struggling with.
