What Causes Psoriasis?

The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, but having a low immune system can lead to the appearance of this issue. When your immune system is low, you may begin to have inflammation that can result in rapid cell growth.

Normally, skin cells are replaced every 10-30 days, but when someone has psoriasis, new cells can grow as quickly as every 3-4 days. The rapid buildup of old cells being replaced by new ones creates unsightly silver scales on the body.

What Are the Types and Symptoms of Psoriasis?

The symptoms of psoriasis vary based on the specific type you have. The following are the variations of this illness and signs to look out for:

  • Plaque (plack) – about 80-90% of people develop this type. It can be characterized by patches of thick, raised skin called plaques.
  • Guttate (gut-tate) – characterized by the sudden appearance of tiny bumps that cover the torso, legs, and arms.
  • Inverse – this type develops in areas where skin rubs against skin. Signs include smooth red patches of skin that look raw.
  • Pustular – this type of psoriasis causes pus-filled bumps that usually appear only on the feet and hands.
  • Pustular (generalized) – this is potentially life-threatening and causes pus-filled bumps to develop on most of the skin.
  • Erythrodermic – another serious or life-threatening condition in which the skin appears burnt.
  • Nail psoriasis – this type causes changes in the appearance and quality of the nails.
  • Psoriatic arthritis – this type affects the joints and can be commonly seen in fingers or toes.
